STEM Workshops for SEND Audiences
At Lab Rascals, we’re passionate about making STEM accessible and exciting for everyone. With over a decade of experience working alongside SEND schools and charity groups, we design hands-on, interactive workshops that are sensory-friendly and adaptable for different learning abilities. Our goal is to inspire curiosity and foster a love for science in an environment that prioritises safety, inclusion, and engagement.
Dry Ice Experiments
Our dry ice experiments bring science to life with mesmerising fog, bubbling potions, and balloons that inflate by shaking. These hands-on experiments allow everyone to explore the unique properties of dry ice while learning about gases, temperatures, and the science behind these fascinating reactions. The dramatic visual effects and sensory experiences make this workshop a firm favourite.
Bath Bombs
Participants will dive into the world of chemistry as they mix and mould their own bath bombs. This activity introduces basic scientific principles through a fun, hands-on approach that’s easy to understand and enjoyable to create. Everyone take home their own bath bombs, adding a rewarding sense of achievement to the experience.
Slime
Slime making is always a hit! In this workshop, everyone creates their own slime, experimenting with different colours and textures as they learn about polymers and viscosity. The squishy, stretchy slime offers a fantastic sensory experience, allowing participants to get creative while engaging with science. It’s the perfect blend of learning and sensory play, providing a safe, engaging activity that everyone can enjoy.
Dry Ice Volcanoes
For a thrilling visual experience, participants can try their hand at building mini dry ice volcanoes. By adding dry ice to their creations, they’ll see “eruptions” that mimic real volcanic activity in a safe and controlled setting. This workshop introduces chemical reactions and sublimation, with captivating sights and sounds that make learning memorable and fun.
Planetarium Shows
Our planetarium shows are designed to be inclusive and sensory-friendly, providing a unique, immersive experience for SEND audiences. The content can be adapted to meet the specific needs of each group, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all. With calming visuals, adjustable lighting, and clear explanations, the shows are both engaging and informative, sparking curiosity about the universe while being mindful of sensory sensitivities.
While the dome itself has limited accessibility, we can reduce audience sizes to allow participants to lie down if they are unable to sit comfortably.
For more information or to discuss specific arrangements, please contact us. We’re happy to tailor the show to meet the needs of your group.
Staffing
All staff undergo regular DBS checks.
Each staff member has 5+ years of experience working with SEND audiences.
Our workshops are led by a minimum of two staff members.
All lead presenters are highly trained scientists, holding a Master's degree or higher.
Safety
Risk assessments are conducted by trained professionals.
PPE is provided for all participants.
Small groups (1:6) ensure tailored support.
1:1 carers are required to assist where applicable.
Extra time is allocated for health and safety briefings.
If participants are likely to eat the reagents, alternative activities or demonstrations will be provided. Slime and bath bombs are safe due to their low concentrations, while dry ice activities will be done as interactive demonstrations for safety.
Workshop requirements
A well-ventilated room with enough space for participants to work comfortably.
Tables and chairs to accommodate all participants.
Access to running water. Power outlets.
30 minutes set up/clean down time.
A maximum of 12 participants.
Adult supervision is required throughout the session (provided by the school, venue, or carers).
Quiet spaces available if needed for sensory breaks.
Please notify us in advance if participants are likely to eat reagents, so activities can be adjusted.
Pricing for SEND workshops
We offer the same price for SEND audiences as our standard school workshops, with a 10% discount due to smaller group sizes. This ensures accessibility while maintaining the high-quality experience and support tailored to SEND needs.
